WRITING

The Power of Words

First Impressions

Several decades ago, “Head & Shoulders” shampoo’s anti-dandruff advertising campaign declared, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” The ad was clever and successful. It sold shampoo.

The agency that coined such a memorable phrase surely understood the power of words to influence human behavior.

Magicians, be not mistaken. What you say about yourselves and your offerings creates a critical first impression that can lead to an engagement or, conversely, to the loss of a potential client.

A fine, well crafted magic performance should, ideally, be preceded by fine, well-crafted language on your website and in your publicity material. Sadly, this is not always the case, as the following examples, found on actual websites but edited for anonymity, illustrate. (Italics mine)

  • “Magician A is a full time magician whom blends illusion and comedy.”
  • “Y is the premiere magic show in the greater metropolitan area.”
  • “Do you want to have fun, smile, laugh and be amazed?! That is what Magician Z makes you do!!”
  • “Magician B has performed 3000+ shows and 1000s of private parties.”

Thankfully, the situation can be remedied.

A New Service

It matters how you present yourself to the world. What you say about yourself and how you say it will determine what others will say about you. It also affects how the public perceives magicians and magic.

You strive to make your performance “magical,” and rightfully so. However "magical" your performance may be, it needs to be articulated.

It has been my good fortune that The Linking Ring, the official journal of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, has published more than 20 of my articles during the past five years, including two cover stories. I’m also extremely grateful to have been recognized for five consecutive years (2016 - 2020) with Awards of Merit and Awards of Excellence for five of my submissions.

Let's work at it. I enjoy writing. As with my artistic commissions, it all begins with a conversation. Please contact me.
